Ia lahir di Kebumen pada tanggal 16 Desember 1956. Ia meraih gelar sarjana di bidang Fisika Murni dari Universitas Indonesia. Ia meraih gelar doktor di bidang Fisika Material dari Uniersitate Ecole Central de Lyon, Prancis. Keahliannya adalah material keramik dan logam.
